The LMR16006YDDCR from Texas Instruments is a 60V, 600mA step-down DC-DC converter in a SOT-23-6 package. The device integrates a 1.5A/60V N-channel MOSFET switch and operates from a 4.0V to 60V input range, making it ideal for step-down conversion from 12V, 24V, or 48V industrial buses. The 1MHz switching frequency enables the use of small external inductors and capacitors, minimizing solution footprint. The 25uA typical operating quiescent current ensures high light-load efficiency, critical for always-on battery-powered systems. Current-mode control with internal compensation simplifies design by eliminating external compensation components. The device features programmable soft start to limit inrush current, precision enable/UVLO for input voltage monitoring, and cycle-by-cycle current limit for overload protection. The 0.8V feedback voltage with +/-1.5% accuracy supports output voltages as low as 1.0V using an external resistor divider. The SOT-23-6 package is one of the smallest available for 60V buck converters, ideal for space-constrained industrial and automotive applications.

The LMR16006YDDCR uses peak current-mode control with integrated power MOSFET. (1) Control Loop: The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (FB pin) to the 0.8V internal reference and generates a control voltage. This control voltage sets the peak current threshold for the power MOSFET. Each switching cycle, the MOSFET turns on and the inductor current ramps up. When the peak current reaches the threshold, the MOSFET turns off and the inductor current ramps down through the external Schottky diode. (2) Slope Compensation: Internal slope compensation prevents sub-harmonic oscillation at duty cycles above 50%, ensuring stable operation across the full input/output voltage range. (3) Internal Compensation: The error amplifier output is internally compensated, eliminating external RC networks. The compensation is optimized for typical application circuits with specific inductor and output capacitor values. (4) Low IQ Mode: At light loads, the device enters pulse-skipping mode where switching pulses are spaced apart, reducing the effective switching frequency and minimizing switching losses. The 25uA IQ keeps efficiency high even at no load. (5) Protection: Cycle-by-cycle peak current limit (typically 1.5A) protects the MOSFET during output overloads. Thermal shutdown disables the converter at approximately 170C junction temperature.
