The LM5160DNTR from Texas Instruments is a 65V, 2A synchronous step-down (buck) and Fly-Buck DC-DC converter in a WSON-12 package with exposed thermal pad. The device integrates both high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs, eliminating external switches and Schottky diodes. The adaptive constant-on-time (COT) control scheme requires no external loop compensation, supports high step-down ratios, and provides fast transient response. An internal feedback amplifier maintains +/-1% output voltage regulation over the entire operating temperature range. The on-time varies inversely with input voltage, resulting in nearly constant switching frequency. The switching frequency is adjustable from 50kHz to 1MHz via an external resistor, allowing optimization of efficiency versus component size. The FPWM pin selects between forced continuous conduction mode (CCM) for Fly-Buck and low-noise applications, or discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) for higher light-load efficiency. In Fly-Buck configuration, coupled inductors generate isolated output rails, ideal for IGBT and SiC gate driver bias supplies. Protection features include peak and valley current limit, adjustable input UVLO with hysteresis, and thermal shutdown with hysteresis.

The LM5160DNTR uses adaptive constant-on-time (COT) control for the buck power stage. (1) On-Time Generation: The high-side MOSFET on-time is set by an external RON resistor and is inversely proportional to VIN. This inverse relationship maintains nearly constant switching frequency as VIN varies. An on-time pulse is initiated when the FB voltage falls below the reference (2V typical). (2) Off-Time: After the on-time expires, the high-side FET turns off and the low-side synchronous FET turns on. In DCM mode, when the inductor current reaches zero, the low-side FET turns off and the SW node rings, reducing switching losses at light load. In FPWM mode, the low-side FET stays on continuously. (3) Feedback: A transconductance (GM) error amplifier minimizes the error between the FB pin voltage and the 2V reference, improving line and load regulation. The soft-start capacitor provides compensation for this error loop. (4) Current Limit: Peak current limit (2.5A typical) terminates the on-time immediately when exceeded. Valley current limit prevents the inductor current from building up during output overloads. An intelligent current limit off-timer adjusts the off-time based on FB and VIN conditions. (5) Fly-Buck: In FPWM mode, the continuous inductor current drives coupled windings to generate isolated outputs, with the primary output regulating the secondary through the turns ratio.
