The LM358N from Texas Instruments is the dual version of the LM324, containing two independent general-purpose op-amps in a compact 8-pin DIP package. It shares all the LM324’s key advantages: single-supply operation from 3V to 32V, input common-mode range including ground, output swinging to near ground, and low 350µA total supply current. The 8-pin DIP footprint is smaller than the LM324’s 14-pin, making the LM358 ideal when only one or two op-amp channels are needed. The pinout follows the industry-standard dual-op-amp convention (same as NE5532, TL072, LM833), allowing easy upgrades to higher-performance op-amps. The 1MHz GBW and 0.5V/µs slew rate are adequate for DC signal conditioning, audio preamplification, and low-frequency active filtering. The LM358N operates identically to half of the LM324. Each op-amp uses a PNP differential input stage that allows the common-mode range to include ground. The class AB output stage can source current (pulling output toward V+) and sink current (pulling output toward ground), with the output able to swing to within ~5mV of ground when sinking small currents. In single-supply operation, the signal must remain between 0V and V+−1.5V at both input and output. The internal compensation capacitor ensures stability in voltage-follower (unity gain) configuration without external components. Closed-loop bandwidth = GBW / noise_gain; at gain=10, BW ≈ 100kHz. The 0.5V/µs slew rate limits the full-power bandwidth: at 5V peak output, BW_max = 0.5/(2π×5) ≈ 16kHz. For AC-coupled applications, a V+/2 bias voltage is needed; for DC ground-referenced signals (sensors, battery monitors), no bias is required.
