The LM358N from Texas Instruments consists of two independent high-gain operational amplifiers designed for single-supply operation from 3V to 32V (or dual supplies ±1.5V to ±16V). The key feature distinguishing it from general-purpose op-amps is the input common-mode voltage range that includes ground (0V), allowing direct ground-referenced sensing without a negative supply. The output can swing to within 1.5V of the positive rail (and nearly to ground under light load), providing maximum dynamic range in single-supply applications. The 1.1MHz GBW and 0.6V/µs slew rate are sufficient for DC and low-frequency applications. The 0.7mA total supply current for both amplifiers makes it attractive for battery-powered designs. The N suffix denotes the PDIP-8 through-hole package.

Each amplifier in the LM358N is a conventional voltage-feedback operational amplifier with a PNP differential input stage that allows the input common-mode range to extend to ground. This is achieved because the input transistors’ collectors connect to the positive supply, and their emitters (through current sources) connect to the input pins. When both inputs are at 0V, the transistors are still active because VCE > 0. The output stage uses a class-AB push-pull configuration that can both source and sink current, but the output cannot swing all the way to VCC (typically reaches VCC-1.5V) due to the VBE drops in the output stage. In a non-inverting amplifier configuration, VOUT = VIN × (1 + RF/RI). In an inverting configuration, VOUT = -VIN × (RF/RI). The internal compensation capacitor provides unity-gain stability, allowing the device to operate with 100% feedback (voltage follower) without oscillation. The 1.1MHz GBW means the open-loop gain drops to unity at 1.1MHz; at a closed-loop gain of 10, the bandwidth is approximately 110kHz.

LM358N uses the PDIP-8 (N) package with industry-standard dual op-amp pinout: Pin 1 = Output A, Pin 2 = Inverting Input A (-), Pin 3 = Non-inverting Input A (+), Pin 4 = GND/VEE, Pin 5 = Non-inverting Input B (+), Pin 6 = Inverting Input B (-), Pin 7 = Output B, Pin 8 = VCC. This pinout is shared by all dual op-amps in DIP-8 including LM358, LM2904, RC4558, NE5532, and TL072. The single-supply operation (3V-32V or ±1.5V to ±16V) allows inputs to go to ground without phase reversal. Output swings to within 0-20mV of ground in single-supply configuration.
