The LM358N from Texas Instruments is a dual general-purpose operational amplifier from the industry-standard LM358 family. The device consists of two independent high-gain, internally frequency-compensated op-amps designed to operate from a single supply over a wide range of 3V to 32V (or +/-1.5V to +/-16V dual supplies). A key feature is that the input common-mode voltage range includes ground, allowing the amplifier to operate in single-supply applications without a negative supply. The output voltage can swing to within a few millivolts of ground when driving low-current loads. The 1.1MHz gain-bandwidth product and 0.7V/us slew rate are adequate for many general-purpose audio and instrumentation applications. The 45nA input bias current allows interfacing with high-impedance sources. The N suffix indicates the 8-pin PDIP through-hole package, the most common and cost-effective package for prototyping and low-volume production.

The LM358N operates as a dual single-supply operational amplifier. (1) Single-Supply Input Stage: The input stage uses a PNP differential pair with the emitters connected to VCC through a current source. This topology allows the input common-mode voltage to extend to ground (0V) because the PNP transistors remain active when both inputs are at ground potential. The maximum common-mode voltage is approximately VCC-1.5V. (2) Output Stage: The output uses a class-AB push-pull configuration with an NPN pull-up transistor and a passive (resistive) pull-down. The resistive pull-down allows the output to swing very close to ground (typically 5mV at low load current), but limits the output sink current compared to the source current. (3) Internal Compensation: A 30pF internal capacitor provides dominant-pole compensation, ensuring stability in unity-gain (voltage follower) configurations without external compensation components. The 1.1MHz GBW product is set by this compensation. (4) Low-Voltage Operation: The LM358 is specified to operate down to 3V single supply, making it suitable for 3.3V and 5V logic-powered systems.
