The LM317AT/NOPB from Texas Instruments is the industry-standard adjustable positive voltage regulator, capable of supplying 1.5A over an output range of 1.25V to 37V. The output is set by two external resistors. Built-in protections include thermal shutdown, short-circuit current limiting, and output transistor safe area compensation. The LM317A variant offers tighter reference voltage tolerance (1% vs 4%).

The LM317 maintains 1.25V between the output and adjustment pins. An external resistor divider sets the output: VOUT = 1.25V × (1 + R2/R1) + IADJ × R2. The adjustment pin current (IADJ ≈ 50µA) is small and constant. Internal protection circuits limit current during short circuits and reduce output when junction temperature exceeds safe limits.
