The LM2576SX-ADJ/NOPB is a member of the SIMPLE SWITCHER family from Texas Instruments, providing a complete 3A step-down (buck) switching regulator in a single IC with only 4 external components needed. The adjustable version outputs 1.23V to 37V from a 4V to 40V input, with ±4% output tolerance over line and load conditions. The 52kHz fixed-frequency oscillator eliminates the need for external timing components. A TTL-compatible ON/OFF pin enables shutdown mode with only 50µA standby current. Internal protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, thermal shutdown, and output transistor safe-area compensation. The SX suffix denotes tape-and-reel packaging in the surface-mount TO-263-5 (D2PAK) package.

The LM2576SX-ADJ uses a fixed-frequency voltage-mode PWM control scheme. An internal 52kHz oscillator generates the switching timing. The output voltage is sensed through an external resistor divider connected to the feedback (FB) pin, which is compared with the internal 1.23V reference. The error amplifier output controls the duty cycle of the internal NPN Darlington switch transistor. When the switch is on, current flows through the inductor to the output and the inductor stores energy. When the switch turns off, the inductor current flows through the external catch diode to the output, releasing stored energy. The output capacitor smooths the voltage ripple. Cycle-by-cycle current limiting monitors the switch current on each switching cycle and terminates the on-time if the current exceeds approximately 4.5A. Under short-circuit conditions, when the FB pin voltage drops below approximately 0.58V, the switching frequency is reduced to about 11kHz, allowing the inductor current sufficient time to ramp down during the off-time and preventing inductor saturation. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the switch when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 170°C.
