LM2576S-5.0 Overview

The LM2576S-5.0 is a fixed 5.0V output step-down DC-DC converter from Texas Instruments, with maximum input voltage of 40V, output current of 3A, in a TO-263-5 package. It integrates frequency compensation, requiring only a few external components.

The LM2576S-5.0 is a 3 A, 40 V step-down switching voltage regulator from Texas Instruments in a TO-263-5 (D2PAK) surface-mount package, providing a fixed 5.0 V output. It requires only four external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, catch diode, and inductor) and operates at a fixed 52 kHz switching frequency. Features include 77 percent efficiency, TTL-level shutdown with 50 uA standby current, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, and thermal shutdown with full protection under fault conditions. The output voltage tolerance is plus or minus 4 percent over line and load conditions.

The LM2576S-5.0 uses a fixed-frequency pulse-width modulation (PWM) buck converter topology operating at 52 kHz. The internal power switch (a Darlington NPN transistor) connects the input voltage to the output inductor during the on-time, causing inductor current to ramp up linearly. When the switch turns off, the inductor current freewheels through the external catch diode (a Schottky diode is recommended for efficiency), delivering energy to the output capacitor and load. The output voltage is divided down by an internal resistor network and compared with an internal 1.23 V reference by the error amplifier. The error amplifier output controls the PWM comparator, which adjusts the switch duty cycle to maintain the output at 5.0 V. The cycle-by-cycle current limit monitors the switch current and terminates the on-time if it exceeds approximately 4.5 A, protecting the device from overload. The ON/OFF pin allows TTL-level shutdown; when pulled below 1.4 V, the device enters a low-power standby mode drawing only 50 uA typical. The thermal shutdown disables the output switch when the die temperature exceeds approximately 170 C.

LM2576S-5.0 is a 3A/40V step-down regulator from TI in TO-263 (D2PAK). The LM2576SX-5.0/NOPB is the active replacement in the same package. The LM2596S-5.0 provides 3A with 150kHz switching for smaller inductors. The LMR51430 from TI offers modern 500kHz/1.1MHz switching in smaller VQFN. The TLVM13630 from TI is a 3A power module requiring no external inductor selection. The AP1509-5.0 from BCR provides a lower-cost 2A/150kHz alternative. The LM2676S-5.0 offers 260kHz switching for smaller passive components.
