The Microchip LAN8710AI-EZK is a single-chip 10/100 Ethernet physical layer transceiver (PHY) supporting both MII and RMII MAC interfaces with HP Auto-MDIX and Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE). The device integrates the complete PHY layer including 100BASE-TX transmitter and receiver, 10BASE-T transmitter and receiver, auto-negotiation, and HP Auto-MDIX—which automatically detects and corrects for crossover and straight-through cable configurations, eliminating a common installation error. The flexPWR technology supports variable I/O voltages from 1.6V to 3.6V on the digital interface pins, enabling direct connection to 1.8V, 2.5V, or 3.3V MACs without voltage translation. An integrated 1.2V regulator with disable feature allows operation from a single 3.3V supply, simplifying the power tree. The RMII interface reduces the MAC-to-PHY pin count from 16 (MII) to 7, saving valuable MCU/MPU I/O pins. The industrial temperature range (-40C to +85C) supports factory automation, building control, and outdoor networking applications. Power consumption is minimized through multiple low-power modes including EEE (IEEE 802.3az) which reduces power during periods of low data activity. Two LED outputs provide link status and activity indication.

The LAN8710AI implements the IEEE 802.3/802.3u physical layer for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet. In 100BASE-TX mode, the transmitter takes 4-bit nibbles from the MII/RMII interface, performs 4B/5B encoding, scrambles the data, and drives the MLT-3 encoded signal onto the twisted pair through the external magnetics and RJ45 connector. The receiver performs the inverse: MLT-3 decoding, descrambling, 5B/4B decoding, and delivers the data to the MAC via MII/RMII. In 10BASE-T mode, Manchester encoding/decoding is used instead. Auto-negotiation determines the highest common speed and duplex mode between the local and remote PHY by exchanging link pulse sequences. HP Auto-MDIX automatically swaps the transmit and receive pairs to accommodate either straight-through or crossover cables by detecting the signal polarity on the receive pairs during link establishment. The EEE feature enters a low-power idle (LPI) state during periods of no data transmission, waking up periodically to refresh the link state—reducing power consumption by up to 40% compared to continuous active operation. The SMI (Station Management Interface) provides read/write access to the 32 internal management registers for configuration and status monitoring.
