The Microchip KSZ8091MNXIA-TR is a single-supply 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet physical-layer transceiver for transmission and reception of data over standard CAT-5 UTP cable. As a highly integrated PHY solution, it reduces board cost and simplifies layout by integrating on-chip termination resistors for differential pairs, a low-noise 1.2V core regulator, and flexible 1.8/2.5/3.3V digital I/O voltage support. The MNX variant provides the Media Independent Interface (MII) for direct connection to MII-compliant Ethernet MAC processors and switches. Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) reduces power during idle traffic, while Wake-on-LAN enables system wakeup from standby mode. LinkMD TDR-based cable diagnostics and parametric NAND tree support facilitate system bring-up and production testing.

The KSZ8091MNXIA-TR operates as an Ethernet PHY layer transceiver that encodes and decodes data between the MAC-side MII interface and the line-side differential TX/RX pairs connected to the RJ-45 magnetics. On the transmit path, 4-bit nibble data from the MAC via MII is encoded using 4B/5B coding (100BASE-TX) or Manchester encoding (10BASE-T), scrambled, and driven onto the differential TXP/TXN pair through an internal line driver with on-chip 50-ohm termination. On the receive path, the differential signal from the cable is equalized, decoded, and presented as 4-bit nibble data on the MII RXD[3:0] bus synchronized to RXC. Auto-negotiation selects the highest common speed and duplex mode. The integrated 1.2V regulator powers the digital core from the 3.3V supply, eliminating an external LDO. The MDC/MDIO management interface provides register-level access for configuration, status monitoring, and cable diagnostics via the LinkMD TDR function.
