The KA7924TU from onsemi (formerly Fairchild) is a 1A, -24V fixed output negative voltage regulator in a TO-220 through-hole package. Part of the KA79XX/LM79XX family of three-terminal negative regulators, it provides a stable -24V output from input voltages between -27V and -38V. The device employs internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe operating area compensation to protect against overload and fault conditions. The +/-4% output voltage tolerance ensures reliable negative rail regulation for operational amplifier and analog circuits requiring symmetrical dual supplies. The 54dB typical ripple rejection at 120Hz effectively attenuates power supply ripple. The 2V typical dropout voltage at 1A provides adequate headroom for regulation. The TO-220 package enables easy heatsink mounting for power dissipation up to 15W with adequate cooling. The KA7924TU uses a series-pass transistor topology for negative voltage regulation. (1) Reference: An internal bandgap reference sets the -24V output voltage. The reference is temperature-compensated and laser-trimmed during manufacturing for +/-4% accuracy. (2) Error Amplifier: A differential error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage to the internal reference. The amplifier drives the base of the series-pass NPN transistor to maintain regulation. (3) Pass Transistor: A Darlington NPN transistor passes current from the negative input to the output. The 2V dropout voltage is the sum of the VCE(sat) and the reference headroom requirements. (4) Protection: Current limiting protects against output short circuits by reducing the pass transistor base drive when current exceeds approximately 2.2A peak. Thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C. Safe operating area compensation reduces current limit at high input-output differentials. (5) Ripple Rejection: The error amplifier’s high loop gain provides 54-60dB of ripple rejection at 120Hz by actively canceling input ripple at the output.
