The ISO3088DWR is a Texas Instruments 20Mbps half-duplex isolated RS-485 and RS-422 transceiver providing 2500Vrms galvanic isolation between the bus-side and logic-side circuits. The isolation barrier breaks ground loops, allowing operation with large common-mode voltage differences common in long-distance industrial networks. The 1/8 unit load specification permits up to 256 nodes on a single bus. The 50kV/us typical common-mode transient immunity (CMTI) ensures robust operation in electrically noisy environments near motor drives and power converters. Fail-safe receiver design guarantees a logic-high output when the bus is open, shorted, or idle. The 12kV HBM ESD protection on bus pins and thermal shutdown provide additional fault tolerance. The device meets TIA/EIA RS-485 standards and is VDE, CSA, and UL safety certified. Packaged in 16-pin wide-body SOIC rated for -40C to +85C.

The ISO3088 uses capacitive SiO2 isolation technology to separate the bus transceiver from the logic interface. The isolation barrier consists of high-voltage silicon dioxide capacitors that couple digital signals across the barrier while blocking DC and low-frequency common-mode voltages. The driver converts single-ended logic signals (D, DE) into differential RS-485 bus signals (A, B) with controlled slew rate for 20Mbps operation. The receiver converts differential bus signals back to single-ended logic (R). In half-duplex mode, the driver and receiver share the same A/B bus pins, with the driver enable (DE) and receiver enable (RE) controlling direction. The fail-safe receiver biases the inputs so that an idle or open bus produces a logic-high on R, preventing false start bits in UART communication.
