The ISL83483IBZ-T from Renesas Electronics (formerly Intersil) is a 3.3V BiCMOS RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver in SOIC-8 package. The device operates from a single 3.0V to 3.6V supply and supports 250kbps data rate with slew-rate limited driver outputs for error-free communication on long, improperly terminated networks. The 0.65mA typical quiescent current and nano-ampere shutdown mode make it suitable for power-sensitive applications. The fail-safe open receiver ensures a logic-high output when inputs are floating. Driver outputs feature current limiting and thermal shutdown for robustness during bus contention. The IBZ-T suffix denotes SOIC-8 package with tape and reel.

The ISL83483IBZ-T operates as a 3.3V RS-485/RS-422 half-duplex transceiver. (1) The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS logic at the DI input to differential RS-485 levels at the Y and Z outputs. The differential output voltage is at least 1.5V across a 54-ohm load (RS-485 standard), even at VCC=3.0V. The DE (driver enable) pin tri-states the driver outputs for half-duplex operation. The slew-rate limited driver outputs minimize EMI and reflections on long, improperly terminated networks, limiting the data rate to 250kbps. (2) The receiver converts differential RS-485 levels at the A and B inputs to single-ended TTL/CMOS logic at the RO output. The receiver has 50mV input hysteresis for noise immunity. The fail-safe open feature guarantees a logic-high RO output when the receiver inputs are floating or the bus is disconnected. The RE (receiver enable) pin tri-states the receiver output. (3) The shutdown mode is entered when RE is high and DE is low simultaneously for more than 300ns. In shutdown, the supply current drops to 1nA typical. The driver outputs include short-circuit current limiting and thermal shutdown that disables the driver if excessive power dissipation occurs during bus contention.
