The INA240A1EDRQ1 from Texas Instruments is an automotive-qualified bidirectional current sense amplifier with a fixed gain of 20 V/V. The device features an exceptional -4 V to +80 V common-mode voltage range that operates independently of the 2.7-5.5 V supply, enabling current measurement on high-side and low-side shunts as well as below-ground sensing during solenoid flyback periods. The enhanced PWM rejection circuitry suppresses large common-mode transients (dV/dt) from motor drive PWM signals, eliminating output ripple artifacts that plague conventional current sense amplifiers. The zero-drift architecture delivers +/-25 uV max offset voltage with 250 nV/C drift, enabling accurate measurement of very small shunt voltages (down to 10 mV full-scale). AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualification ensures reliability in automotive environments.

The INA240A1EDRQ1 uses a zero-drift (chopper-stabilized) architecture where the input offset and 1/f noise are continuously corrected by modulating the input signal at a high frequency, passing it through the amplifier, and then demodulating the output. This auto-correction cycle eliminates offset drift and low-frequency noise, achieving +/-25 uV max offset over temperature. The enhanced PWM rejection circuit consists of a specialized input filter and common-mode detection stage that identifies rapid common-mode transitions (such as PWM switching edges) and applies additional suppression during these events. Two reference pins (REF1, REF2) allow setting the output baseline voltage for bidirectional sensing: the output voltage equals VREF + Gain x (IN+ – IN-). The -4 V negative common-mode capability is achieved through a charge-pump circuit that biases the input stage below ground, accommodating the negative flyback voltage across inductive loads.
