The FT4232HL-REEL from FTDI is a quad-channel USB 2.0 High Speed (480 Mb/s) to UART/MPSSE IC in a 64-pin LQFP package. As FTDI’s 5th generation USB device, it features four UARTs with two independently configurable MPSSE engines for JTAG, SPI, I2C, and bit-bang emulation. The entire USB protocol is handled on-chip with no firmware programming required.

The FT4232H is FTDI’s 5th generation USB device, providing a single-chip USB 2.0 High Speed (480 Mb/s) to quad UART/MPSSE bridge solution. The device integrates four independent UART channels, two of which can be independently configured as Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) interfaces for JTAG, SPI, I2C, or bit-bang operation. The entire USB protocol is handled on-chip, eliminating the need for USB firmware development. The highly integrated design includes an internal +1.8 V LDO regulator for VCORE, an on-chip clock multiplier PLL (12 MHz to 480 MHz), and programmable I/O drive strength. FTDI’s royalty-free Virtual COM Port (VCP) and Direct (D2XX) drivers further simplify system integration.

The FT4232H connects to a USB host through its D+ and D- pins, handling all USB 2.0 High Speed protocol transactions internally. The internal PLL multiplies the 12 MHz external clock to 480 MHz for USB HS operation. Data received over USB is demultiplexed into one of four UART channels based on endpoint addressing. Channels A and B include MPSSE engines that translate USB commands into synchronous serial protocols (JTAG TCK/TMS/TDI/TDO, SPI SCK/MOSI/MISO/CS, I2C SCL/SDA). Each UART channel has independent baud rate generators and 256-byte transmit/receive FIFOs. The internal LDO generates 1.8 V for the core logic from the 3.3 V supply. Configurable EEPROM stores USB VID/PID, serial number, and channel mode settings.
