The EQY-3-63+ from Mini-Circuits is a MMIC gain equalizer designed to compensate for the positive gain slope (higher gain at low frequencies, lower gain at high frequencies) common in RF amplifiers and receiver chains. The device provides a 3.2dB negative slope across its DC to 6GHz operating range, with insertion loss varying from 3.78dB at 10MHz down to 0.58dB at 6GHz. This inverse slope characteristic, when placed in series with an amplifier that has a positive gain slope, produces a flatter overall frequency response. The absorptive design ensures low VSWR (better than 1.3:1) across the entire frequency range in both forward and reverse directions. Built on GaAs IPD (Integrated Passive Device) MMIC technology, the EQY-3-63+ achieves this precise frequency response in an extremely compact 2mm x 2mm MCLP-8 package, making it easy to insert into existing RF signal chains with minimal board impact.

The EQY-3-63+ uses a passive LC network implemented in GaAs IPD MMIC technology to create a frequency-dependent attenuation profile. At low frequencies (near DC), the network presents maximum attenuation (3.78dB), and as frequency increases, the attenuation decreases progressively, reaching only 0.58dB at 6GHz. This negative slope response is the mathematical inverse of the typical positive gain slope seen in broadband amplifiers, where gain decreases with frequency. When the equalizer is placed in series with the amplifier, the total frequency response becomes the sum (in dB) of the amplifier gain and the equalizer attenuation, resulting in a much flatter net gain versus frequency. The absorptive topology uses resistive elements to absorb rather than reflect the unwanted signal energy, ensuring that the VSWR remains low in both directions regardless of the frequency.
