The EPM240T100I5N is an Intel (formerly Altera) MAX II family Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD) in a 100-pin TQFP package. With 240 logic elements and 192 macrocells, it provides sufficient logic density for medium-complexity digital functions such as bus decoding, state machines, and interface glue logic. The 4.7ns maximum pin-to-pin propagation delay ensures deterministic timing for time-critical control applications. Unlike SRAM-based FPGAs, the MAX II stores its configuration in on-chip Flash memory, enabling instant-on operation without external configuration devices – a critical advantage in industrial environments where power interruptions are common. The 80 user I/O pins support 2.5V and 3.3V I/O standards, with independent VCCIO banks for voltage mixing. The IEEE 1149.1 JTAG interface supports in-system programming, boundary-scan testing, and configuration via USB Blaster. Each LAB contains 16 macrocells with a programmable AND/fixed OR structure, a configurable flip-flop, and programmable I/O cell controls. The PIA provides global routing between LABs with fixed, deterministic routing delays that guarantee the 4.7ns worst-case propagation delay. The Flash configuration cells store the programming data permanently, eliminating the need for external configuration PROMs and enabling zero-power standby (Flash does not require refresh). On power-up, the device is immediately operational since the configuration is already stored in non-volatile cells. The JTAG TAP controller provides serial access for programming the Flash cells and performing boundary-scan interconnect testing per IEEE 1149.1. The I/O elements (IOEs) provide tri-state output enable, open-drain, and input register options for each of the 80 I/O pins.
