The DSF505Q3R0 is a 5 Farad 3 V electric double-layer capacitor (supercapacitor) from Cornell Dubilier Knowles in a radial through-hole package (10 mm diameter x 22 mm height). With 70 mOhm ESR, it delivers rapid energy discharge for pulse power applications. The 500,000-cycle endurance ensures long service life in backup and pulse applications. Operating from -40 to +85 deg C, it is suitable for industrial and consumer applications requiring short-term energy storage without the weight and complexity of batteries.

The DSF505Q3R0 uses activated carbon electrodes immersed in an organic electrolyte, forming an electric double layer at each electrode-electrolyte interface. Unlike conventional capacitors that store charge in a dielectric, the EDLC stores charge electrostatically in the Helmholtz double layer at the electrode surface. The extremely high surface area of the activated carbon (1000-3000 m2/g) enables the 5 F capacitance in a compact volume. The 3 V cell voltage is achieved through the organic electrolyte’s wider electrochemical window compared to aqueous types. During discharge, ions redistribute from the double layer back into the bulk electrolyte, releasing stored energy. The ESR is dominated by the ionic resistance of the electrolyte in the porous electrode structure.
