The INMP621ACEZ-R7 from InvenSense (TDK) is a wide dynamic range MEMS microphone with PDM digital output in a 4 x 3 x 1 mm LGA package. With 133 dB SPL acoustic overload point and 65 dBA SNR, it captures audio from whisper-quiet to extreme SPL environments without clipping. The fourth-order sigma-delta modulator outputs a 1-bit PDM signal, eliminating the need for an external ADC. The 1.2 mA operating current and 45 Hz to >20 kHz frequency response suit battery-powered voice recognition, conferencing, and high-fidelity recording applications. Note: This product is EOL; InvenSense recommends T5838 as the replacement for new designs.

The INMP621 uses a capacitive MEMS transducer where a thin polysilicon diaphragm is suspended above a perforated backplate, forming a variable capacitor. Sound pressure deflects the diaphragm, changing the capacitance. A CMOS ASIC integrates a charge amplifier, anti-aliasing filter, and fourth-order sigma-delta modulator on the same die as the MEMS structure. The modulator converts the analog capacitance change into a 1-bit PDM (Pulse Density Modulation) stream at the clock frequency (typically 2.4-4.8 MHz). The host codec or DSP decimates the PDM stream to produce a multi-bit PCM audio signal. The L/R select pin enables two INMP621 devices to share a single data line, with left and right channels time-multiplexed on alternate clock edges for stereo capture.
