The DS9503P+T&R from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is an ESD protection diode with integrated 5 Ω isolation resistors designed specifically for 1-Wire interface protection. Featuring a snapback (fast-recovery) Zener characteristic that clamps ESD events to safe voltage levels, it raises ESD protection to over 27 kV (IEC 801-2) when used with circuits that already have basic ESD protection. The device is housed in a TSOC-6 surface-mount package and is tape-and-reel packaged for automated assembly.

The DS9503P+T&R from Analog Devices is an ESD protection diode designed specifically for 1-Wire interface applications. Compared to the DS9502, the DS9503 integrates two 5 Ω isolation resistors that provide additional circuit protection during ESD events. During normal operation, the 5 Ω resistors are negligible for 1-Wire communication. However, during an ESD strike, the resistors present a relatively high impedance compared to the conducting snapback diode, forcing the ESD energy through the diode and isolating the protected circuit on the other side. The snapback (fast-recovery) Zener characteristic means that once the trigger voltage is exceeded, the device enters a low-voltage holding state, effectively clamping the transient. If an extreme ESD event exceeds the device’s maximum rating, the DS9503 fails short, providing fail-safe protection.

The DS9503P+T&R operates through a snapback Zener mechanism: (1) Normal Operation — the device presents a high impedance with low leakage current and low capacitance, not affecting 1-Wire communication through the 5 Ω series resistors; (2) ESD Trigger — when a voltage transient exceeds the trigger voltage (~9 V), the internal Zener junction avalanches and the device enters snapback mode, where the voltage drops to the holding voltage (~6 V) while conducting high current; (3) Energy Absorption — the ESD energy is dissipated in the Zener junction while the 5 Ω resistors isolate the protected circuit side from the ESD event on the 1-Wire line side; (4) Recovery — when the transient current drops below the holding current, the device exits snapback and returns to high-impedance state; (5) Fail-Safe — if the ESD energy exceeds the device’s absorption capability, the junction fuses into a permanent short circuit, ensuring the protected circuit is not exposed to dangerous voltages.
