The Texas Instruments DRV8871DDAR is a single H-bridge brushed DC motor driver featuring integrated current sensing that eliminates the need for an external sense resistor. Operating from a wide 6.5V to 45V supply, it delivers up to 3.6A peak output current through four integrated N-channel MOSFETs with 565 mOhm typical RDS(ON). The device uses two logic inputs for PWM speed and direction control, with both inputs low entering a low-power sleep mode (10 µA). The internal current regulation circuit uses a low-power RILIM resistor to set the current trip threshold; when the motor current reaches this threshold, the device enters slow-decay mode for a fixed off-time (25 µs typical), providing precise current limiting without a high-power sense resistor or reference voltage. Protection features include undervoltage lockout (UVLO), overcurrent protection (OCP), and thermal shutdown (TSD) with automatic recovery.

The DRV8871DDAR integrates four N-channel MOSFETs in an H-bridge configuration controlled by two logic inputs (IN1, IN2). The truth table is: IN1=1,IN2=0=forward; IN1=0,IN2=1=reverse; IN1=1,IN2=1=brake (low-side); IN1=0,IN2=0=sleep/coast. PWM speed control is achieved by switching between the drive state (forward/reverse) and the brake state at a duty cycle proportional to the desired speed. The integrated current regulation circuit measures the motor current through the MOSFETs internally (eliminating the external sense resistor). When the current exceeds the threshold set by the RILIM resistor (Itrip = K / RILIM), the device forces slow decay by enabling both low-side MOSFETs for a fixed off-time of 25 µs. After the off-time expires, the bridge re-enters the drive state, and the cycle repeats. This provides average current regulation without the power dissipation and cost of an external sense resistor. The overcurrent protection circuit disables all MOSFETs if the current exceeds the OCP threshold (approximately 6A), retrying after a fixed delay. Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 150°C junction temperature.
