The CAT24C02TDI-GT3A from onsemi is a 2Kbit (256 bytes) serial I2C EEPROM in an ultra-compact TSOT-23-5 package. The device supports both Standard (100kHz) and Fast (400kHz) I2C modes, providing flexible data rates for various MCU I2C peripherals. The 1.7V to 5.5V supply voltage range allows operation from low-voltage 1.8V MCUs up to 5V systems without level translation. The 16-byte page write buffer allows up to 16 bytes to be written in a single internal write cycle, reducing overall write time for multi-byte data structures. The hardware write protection (WP) pin can prevent inadvertent writes to the entire memory array. Schmitt trigger inputs on SCL and SDA provide improved noise immunity in electrically noisy environments. The internal power-on reset (POR) circuit ensures the EEPROM is in a known state after power-up, preventing data corruption during brown-out conditions. The 1 million write cycle endurance and 100-year data retention provide exceptional reliability for configuration and calibration data storage. The GT3A suffix indicates tape and reel packaging with 3000 units per reel.

The CAT24C02TDI-GT3A uses a floating-gate CMOS EEPROM cell array to store data. Each byte consists of 8 floating-gate transistors that can hold charge indefinitely (100-year retention) when no power is applied. Writing data involves tunneling electrons onto the floating gate through Fowler-Nordheim tunneling, which requires approximately 14V generated by an internal charge pump from the 1.7-5.5V supply. The write operation is initiated by sending an I2C START condition, the device address byte (1010A2A1A0R/W#), the word address byte, and up to 16 data bytes, followed by a STOP condition. The internal write cycle takes up to 5ms, during which the device does not acknowledge I2C bus requests (ACK polling can be used to detect completion). Reading data is non-destructive: after sending the device address and word address, the master issues a repeated START with the R/W# bit set to 1, and the EEPROM shifts out data bytes while incrementing the internal address counter. The Schmitt triggers on SCL and SDA inputs convert slowly-rising or noisy signals into clean digital edges, preventing false clock or data detection. The WP pin, when tied HIGH, prevents write operations to the entire memory array while still allowing reads.
