The BQ24600RVAR from Texas Instruments is a highly integrated stand-alone synchronous switch-mode battery charge controller for Li-Ion and Li-Polymer batteries in a 16-pin VQFN (3.5×3.5mm) package. The device implements a constant-frequency synchronous PWM buck converter operating at 1.2MHz, supporting 1S to 6S battery configurations with input voltages from 5V to 28V and programmable charge current up to 10A. Charging follows three phases: preconditioning (trickle charge for deeply discharged cells), constant current (fast charge), and constant voltage (taper charge). Charge termination occurs when the current drops below a minimum threshold. The charge voltage regulation accuracy of +/-0.5% and charge current accuracy of +/-3% ensure safe and precise battery charging. The device features internal loop compensation and internal soft start, minimizing external component count. Safety features include input overvoltage protection, battery overvoltage protection, charge overcurrent protection, battery short protection, thermal shutdown, and a built-in safety timer. The TS (thermistor sense) pin monitors battery temperature via an NTC thermistor and suspends charging when the battery is too hot or too cold. Status outputs indicate adapter presence and charger operation state. The low quiescent current (less than 1.5mA off-state input, less than 15uA off-state battery discharge) minimizes battery drain when the charger is inactive.

The BQ24600RVAR controls a synchronous buck converter to regulate battery charge current and voltage. (1) Power Stage: The controller drives external high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs in a synchronous buck configuration. The 1.2MHz switching frequency enables small inductor and capacitor values. The 30ns driver dead-time and 99.5% maximum duty cycle ensure high efficiency across the input voltage range. (2) Charging Phases: For deeply discharged batteries (below VBATLOW threshold), the preconditioning phase applies a reduced current (typically C/10) to safely recover the cells. Once the battery voltage rises above VBATLOW, the constant current (CC) phase applies the full programmed charge current. When the battery reaches the regulation voltage, the constant voltage (CV) phase tapers the current. Charging terminates when the current drops below the termination threshold. (3) Current Sensing: An external sense resistor between SRP and SRN pins measures the charge current. The voltage across the sense resistor is compared to the programmed current set point. (4) Voltage Regulation: A resistor divider from the battery to the VFB pin sets the regulation voltage. The internal reference achieves +/-0.5% accuracy. (5) Safety: The TS pin compares the NTC thermistor voltage against internal thresholds for hot/cold detection. The built-in safety timer provides a backup charge termination if the normal termination fails.
