The STMicroelectronics BALF-NRG-02D3 is an ultra-miniature balun with integrated matching network and harmonic filter, specifically designed for conjugate impedance matching to the ST BlueNRG-1 and BlueNRG-2 Bluetooth Low Energy transceivers. Using ST’s Integrated Passive Device (IPD) technology on a non-conductive glass substrate, it integrates the balun transformer, impedance matching network, and harmonic rejection filter into a chip-scale package occupying less than 1.5 mm². The 50-ohm unbalanced input connects directly to the antenna, while the balanced output provides the differential RF signal required by the BlueNRG transceiver. The integrated harmonic filter ensures compliance with FCC and ETSI spurious emission limits without additional external filter components.

The BALF-NRG-02D3 integrates three RF functions on a single glass substrate using ST’s IPD technology: (1) an unbalanced-to-balanced transformer (balun) that converts the single-ended antenna signal to the differential signal required by the BlueNRG transceiver, (2) an impedance matching network that provides conjugate matching between the 50-ohm antenna port and the BlueNRG differential RF port, maximizing power transfer and minimizing reflections, and (3) a low-pass harmonic filter that attenuates second and third harmonic emissions to comply with regulatory spurious emission limits. The IPD technology uses thin-film passive components (inductors and capacitors) fabricated on a glass substrate with superior RF loss characteristics compared to silicon-based implementations. The 3° maximum phase imbalance ensures balanced differential signaling for optimal transceiver performance, while the 1.85 dB maximum insertion loss preserves the link budget.
