The AMS1117 from Advanced Monolithic Systems is a low-dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator available in fixed output voltages of 1.2V, 1.5V, 1.8V, 2.5V, 2.85V, 3.3V, and 5.0V, as well as an adjustable version. Housed in SOT-223 and TO-252 packages, it delivers up to 1A output current with a typical dropout voltage of 1.1V at full load, making it one of the most widely used LDO regulators in consumer and embedded electronics.

The AMS1117 from Advanced Monolithic Systems is a three-terminal low-dropout voltage regulator family providing up to 1A output current. Available in fixed voltages from 1.2V to 5.0V and an adjustable version with a 1.25V reference, the AMS1117 is one of the most ubiquitous LDO regulators in the electronics industry. Its dropout voltage is guaranteed at 1.3V maximum at full load, with typical values around 1.1V. Unlike PNP-type regulators that waste quiescent current, the AMS1117 directs quiescent current into the load, improving overall efficiency. On-chip thermal limiting and current limit protection ensure reliable operation under overload conditions.

The AMS1117 operates as a series-pass linear regulator using a PNP pass transistor to achieve low dropout voltage. The output voltage is maintained by a feedback loop comparing a fraction of the output (via an internal resistor divider for fixed versions or external resistors for the adjustable version) against a 1.25V bandgap reference. The error amplifier drives the pass transistor to regulate the output. The low dropout characteristic comes from the PNP transistor topology, which requires only a small VCE(sat) to maintain regulation. Thermal shutdown activates at approximately 155°C junction temperature, while foldback current limiting protects against output short circuits.
