The ADUM2250ARWZ is an Analog Devices hot-swappable dual I2C digital isolator in a 16-lead wide-body SOIC package. It provides two bidirectional isolation channels that support a complete isolated I2C interface (SDA and SCL), eliminating the need to split bidirectional I2C signals into separate transmit and receive paths. The 5000Vrms isolation rating per UL 1577 provides reinforced isolation for medical (IEC 60601-1), industrial (IEC 61010-1), and IT (IEC 62368-1) equipment safety requirements. The iCoupler chip-scale transformer technology provides magnetic isolation with superior reliability, longer lifetime, and better CMTI (25kV/us) compared to optocouplers. The hot-swap circuitry prevents data glitches when an unpowered card is inserted onto a live I2C bus. The 30mA current sink capability supports multi-drop I2C buses. The 1MHz I2C speed supports Fast-mode Plus (Fm+) operation. The 3.0V to 5.5V supply range provides level translation across the isolation barrier.

The ADUM2250ARWZ uses ADI iCoupler technology with on-chip microtransformers for data transfer across the isolation barrier. Each bidirectional I2C channel uses two iCoupler channels – one for each direction – with direction control logic that detects which side is driving the bus. When Side 1 SDA is pulled low, the direction logic enables the Side 1 to Side 2 data path. When Side 2 drives SDA low, the opposite path is activated. An internal arbitration mechanism prevents both directions from being active simultaneously. The microtransformers are fabricated on a polyimide isolation layer that provides the 5kVrms dielectric withstand. The hot-swap logic monitors VDD1 and VDD2 supplies and forces the I2C pins to high-impedance when either supply is below the UVLO threshold.
