The ADM3202ARNZ from Analog Devices is a 3.3V RS-232 transceiver with 4 drivers and 4 receivers in a SOIC-16 package. The integrated charge pump doubles and inverts the 3.3V supply to generate the +/-5.5V RS-232 voltage levels, requiring only four 0.1uF external capacitors. The device supports data rates up to 460kbps with +/-15kV HBM ESD protection on all RS-232 pins. Receiver inputs feature hysteresis for improved noise immunity. The 4-driver/4-receiver configuration supports two complete RS-232 ports.

The ADM3202ARNZ integrates RS-232 drivers, receivers, and charge pump in a single IC. (1) Charge Pump: A voltage doubler generates approximately +6.6V from the 3.3V supply, and a voltage inverter generates approximately -6.6V. Four 0.1uF external capacitors store the pumped charge. The charge pump operates at approximately 500kHz. (2) Drivers: Each driver converts 3.3V CMOS logic levels to RS-232 voltage levels (+/-5.5V typical). The output is slew-rate limited to approximately 30V/us to comply with RS-232 specifications and minimize EMI. (3) Receivers: Each receiver converts RS-232 voltage levels to 3.3V CMOS logic. Input threshold is 0.8V/2.4V with 0.5V hysteresis for noise immunity. Inputs can withstand +/-25V without damage.
