The AD8497CRMZ-R7 is an Analog Devices precision thermocouple amplifier specifically trimmed for K-type (chromel-alumel) thermocouples with integrated cold junction compensation. The device combines a fixed-gain instrumentation amplifier (gain of 122.4) with an on-chip temperature sensor that compensates for the reference junction voltage at the PCB connection point. The result is a direct 5mV/C output voltage proportional to the measurement junction temperature, eliminating the need for external compensation circuits or lookup tables. The 2.7V to 36V supply range supports both low-voltage portable and industrial high-voltage applications. The REF pin allows offset adjustment for below-zero temperature measurement with single supply. The rugged inputs withstand 4kV ESD and +/-25V overvoltage, protecting against fault conditions common in industrial environments. The C-grade offers tighter initial accuracy. Packaged in 8-lead MSOP rated for -40C to +125C.

The AD8497 integrates a precision instrumentation amplifier and a cold junction compensation (CJC) temperature sensor in a single IC. The instrumentation amplifier has a fixed gain of 122.4, calibrated to produce a 5mV/C output for K-type thermocouple characteristics over the specified temperature range. The on-chip temperature sensor measures the temperature at the PCB terminal block where the thermocouple wires connect (the reference or cold junction). The sensor output is added to the amplified thermocouple voltage, compensating for the Seebeck voltage generated at the reference junction. The transfer function is VOUT = (TMJ x 5mV/C) + VREF, where TMJ is the measurement junction temperature. The high-impedance differential input rejects common-mode noise on the thermocouple leads, and the REF pin allows offset adjustment for single-supply sub-zero measurement.
