The AD5422BREZ from Analog Devices is a 16-bit DAC providing both current (4-20 mA, 0-20 mA, 0-24 mA) and voltage (+/-10V, +/-5V, 0-10V, 0-5V) outputs with +/-0.03% FSR accuracy. The device integrates a precision 2.5 V bandgap reference with 5 ppm/C drift, output driver, and fault protection circuitry. HART FSK signal coupling capability allows digital communication over the 4-20 mA current loop for smart transmitter applications. The SPI interface operates at up to 30 MHz. On-chip fault protection includes open-circuit, short-circuit, and overtemperature detection. The asynchronous CLEAR function forces the output to 4 mA for failsafe operation during system faults.

The AD5422BREZ uses a 16-bit R-2R DAC core followed by a precision output amplifier and driver stage. The digital code is written via SPI into the input register, then transferred to the DAC register for output update. In current output mode, the output amplifier drives a PNP pass transistor in a feedback loop that regulates loop current through an external sense resistor. The internal 2.5V reference feeds the DAC reference input. The HART modem couples FSK digital signals onto the 4-20 mA loop through the CAP pin, modulating the loop current by +/-0.5 mA at 1200/2200 Hz. In voltage output mode, the output amplifier provides the selected voltage range directly. Fault protection continuously monitors for open loop, short circuit, and overtemperature conditions, reporting status via the FAULT pin and SPI status register. The CLEAR pin asynchronously resets the output to 4 mA for safety.
