The A3988SJPTR-T from Allegro MicroSystems is a dual full-bridge motor driver IC in a TSSOP-28 package. Each full bridge is rated for 1.2A continuous output current at supply voltages up to 28V, with 0.65 Ohm total RDS(on) (high-side plus low-side) per bridge. The two full bridges can independently drive two bipolar stepper motors or four brushed DC motors. Internal PWM fixed off-time current regulation controls the motor current through an external sense resistor, with adjustable blanking time to prevent false current trips during switching transients. The device supports both serial (step/direction) and parallel interface modes for flexible MCU integration. Protection features include thermal shutdown with hysteresis, undervoltage lockout, and crossover current protection. The TSSOP-28 package with exposed thermal pad provides adequate power dissipation for the 1.2A per bridge rating. The A3988 is designed for applications requiring dual-axis motor control in a single compact package.

The A3988SJPTR-T uses DMOS H-bridge output stages with PWM current regulation. (1) H-Bridge: Each full bridge consists of four N-channel DMOS transistors in an H configuration. The diagonal pairs are switched alternately to reverse current direction through the motor winding. The 0.65 Ohm total RDS(on) minimizes conduction losses at 1.2A. (2) PWM Current Control: An external sense resistor in the ground return path measures the motor current. When the current exceeds the trip point (set by the sense resistor value and reference voltage), the bridge enters the off-time phase where the current decays through a recirculation path. After the fixed off-time, the bridge re-energizes and the cycle repeats. (3) Blanking: A programmable blanking time after each bridge turn-on ignores the current sense signal, preventing false trips from switching transients and parasitic diode reverse recovery. (4) Microstepping: In serial interface mode, the device supports microstepping by modulating the PWM duty cycle to regulate the winding current to intermediate levels between full steps.
