Any Boolean function can be implemented using only NAND gates, making this device extremely versatile.

The 74HC00D implements four independent 2-input NAND gates: Y = NOT(A AND B). Each gate takes two inputs and produces one output. The NAND function is universal — any other logic function (NOT, AND, OR, XOR, etc.) can be constructed using only NAND gates. The 74HC (High-speed CMOS) technology provides fast propagation delay (8ns at 6V) with low static power consumption. CMOS inputs present very high impedance (1uA max), and outputs swing rail-to-rail.
