The low equivalent series resistance (ESR) ensures robust oscillator startup across supply voltage and temperature variations. The 0451.500MRL operates as a piezoelectric quartz crystal resonator in fundamental mode at 500 kHz. When an alternating voltage is applied across the crystal electrodes, the quartz wafer vibrates mechanically at its resonant frequency due to the piezoelectric effect. The mechanical resonance has an extremely high Q factor (typically 10,000+), resulting in a very narrow bandwidth and excellent frequency stability. In a Pierce or Colpitts oscillator circuit, the crystal provides frequency-determining feedback that locks the oscillator output to the crystal’s resonant frequency. The 500 kHz fundamental mode is achieved by cutting the quartz wafer to the appropriate thickness for the XY flexure vibration mode, with the load capacitance (12.5 pF typical) determining the exact oscillation frequency through the pullability characteristic of the crystal.
