The ENC28J60-I/SO from Microchip Technology is a stand-alone 10BASE-T Ethernet controller with an industry-standard SPI interface, designed to serve as an Ethernet network interface for any microcontroller equipped with SPI. The device integrates both MAC and PHY layers, providing IEEE 802.3 compliance with 8KB of dual-port buffer RAM for transmit and receive packets. An internal DMA module enables fast data throughput, while hardware-assisted IP checksum calculation offloads the host processor. The SPI interface supports clock rates up to 20MHz for high-speed data transfer.

The ENC28J60-I/SO operates as a complete Ethernet interface controller. (1) The integrated PHY handles the physical layer signaling for 10BASE-T, including waveform shaping, collision detection, and automatic polarity correction. The MAC layer manages frame formatting, address filtering, and CRC generation/verification. (2) The 8KB dual-port SRAM buffer is divided between transmit and receive regions, configurable by the host. Received packets are placed in a hardware-managed circular receive FIFO, while the internal DMA module enables fast data movement between buffers. (3) The SPI interface provides register access and buffer read/write operations at up to 20MHz clock rate. Pattern matching filters allow the host to sleep until a matching packet arrives, with Magic Packet wake-up for remote power management.
