The DRV8824PWPR from Texas Instruments is a dual H-bridge motor driver capable of driving one bipolar stepper motor or two DC motors. Each H-bridge can deliver up to 2.5A of output current from an 8.2V to 45V supply. The device supports up to 1/16 microstepping for smooth, low-vibration stepper motor operation. The internal MOSFETs have 0.35 Ohm RDS(on) per FET (HS+LS = 0.7 Ohm total), providing efficient motor drive. A simple STEP/DIR interface with 3-bit microstep resolution select (M0, M1, M2) allows easy microcontroller control. Built-in protection includes overcurrent protection (OCP) with auto-retry, thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and a fault output pin (nFAULT). The nSLEEP pin reduces supply current to less than 50uA in sleep mode. The HTSSOP-28 package with exposed PowerPAD provides excellent thermal performance for continuous motor operation.

Working Principle:DRV8824PWPR Working Principle

The DRV8824PWPR uses two independent H-bridge power stages for motor drive. (1) H-Bridge: Each bridge consists of four N-channel MOSFETs in an H configuration. By controlling which diagonal pair is turned on, current flows through the motor winding in either direction. PWM chopping regulates the winding current to the desired level. (2) Microstepping: The STEP pin advances the internal indexer by one microstep. The microstep size is set by M0/M1/M2 pins: full, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, or 1/16 step. The indexer generates sine/cosine current references for the two bridges, producing smooth current waveforms at each microstep. (3) Current Regulation: An internal sense resistor or external sense resistor monitors the winding current. When the current exceeds the set threshold, the bridge enters a slow or mixed decay mode until the next PWM cycle. (4) Protection: OCP triggers when the current exceeds approximately 3.5A. Thermal shutdown disables both bridges when the die temperature exceeds 150C. The nFAULT pin is driven low during any fault condition.
