The BQ29707DSET is a cost-effective voltage and current protection integrated circuit from Texas Instruments designed for single-cell lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery packs. It provides comprehensive protection including overcharge (OVP), overdischarge (UVP), charge overcurrent (OCC), discharge overcurrent (OCD), and short-circuit (SCP) detection. The device monitors external power FETs and provides drive outputs for both charge (CHG) and discharge (DSG) FETs, operating at just 4 µA in normal mode and 100 nA in shutdown mode.

The BQ29707 operates through three main subsystems: (1) Voltage Monitoring: Continuously measures cell voltage through the VCC pin, comparing against factory-set OVP and UVP thresholds to protect against overcharge and overdischarge conditions. (2) Current Sensing: Detects overcurrent conditions by monitoring the voltage drop across an external sense resistor between the CS and VSS pins, with ±5mV accuracy for OCD and OCC detection. (3) FET Control: Drives the CHG and DSG FET gate outputs to disconnect the battery when a fault is detected, with configurable fault timers and recovery conditions for each protection type.
