The TPS63001DRCR from Texas Instruments is a high-efficiency buck-boost converter designed for applications where the input voltage can be above, below, or equal to the output voltage. It provides a fixed 3.3V output from a 1.8V to 5.5V input, making it ideal for single-cell Li-Ion battery applications where the battery voltage ranges from 3.0V to 4.2V. The device seamlessly transitions between buck and boost modes without output discontinuity, delivering up to 1.2A in buck mode and 0.8A in boost mode. With up to 96% efficiency and a 2.4MHz fixed switching frequency, it enables compact designs with small external inductors and capacitors. The 30μA quiescent current in power-save mode extends battery life during idle periods.

The TPS63001 operates as a 4-switch buck-boost converter using three operational modes. (1) In buck mode (VIN > VOUT), the high-side switch (S1) and synchronous rectifier (S2) operate as a standard buck converter while the boost switches (S3, S4) remain off. (2) In boost mode (VIN < VOUT), the boost switches (S3, S4) operate as a boost converter while the buck switches (S1, S2) remain in their pass-through states. (3) In buck-boost mode (VIN ≈ VOUT), all four switches are actively controlled in a combined topology to maintain regulation. The device automatically and seamlessly transitions between these modes based on the input-to-output voltage ratio, with no output voltage discontinuity during transitions. Internal current-mode control provides fast transient response and cycle-by-cycle current limiting.
