The TPS62590DRVR is a high-efficiency synchronous step-down converter from Texas Instruments optimized for battery-powered portable applications. Operating from a 2.5V to 5.5V input, it provides up to 1A output current with an adjustable output voltage from 0.75V to VIN using external feedback resistors. The 2.25MHz fixed switching frequency allows the use of small external inductors and capacitors, minimizing solution size. In power-save mode, the quiescent current is only 15μA, maintaining high efficiency at light loads. For noise-sensitive applications, the MODE pin can force continuous PWM operation. The device features 100% duty cycle capability for lowest dropout, integrated soft-start, and less than 1μA shutdown current.

The TPS62590 operates as a voltage-mode synchronous buck converter. (1) The control loop uses voltage-mode PWM control where the error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage (set by the external resistor divider) against the 600mV internal reference. The resulting error signal controls the duty cycle of the integrated high-side and low-side MOSFET switches operating at the fixed 2.25MHz frequency. (2) The power stage consists of integrated N-channel MOSFET switches with synchronous rectification on the low side for high efficiency. The internal soft-start circuit ramps the output voltage gradually to limit inrush current during startup. (3) The mode control selects between power-save mode (PFM) where switching pulses are skipped at light loads to reduce quiescent current to 15μA, and forced PWM mode where continuous switching maintains constant frequency for noise-sensitive loads.
