The TPS563219DDFR from Texas Instruments is a 3A, 2.7V-5.5V input step-down DC-DC converter in an ultra-compact SOT-23-8 package. The device uses TIs D-CAP3 control mode, a proprietary emulated current-mode control that provides fast transient response without external compensation components. This simplifies the design to just five external components: input capacitor, output capacitor, inductor, and two feedback resistors. The 600kHz fixed switching frequency balances efficiency and component size, enabling the use of small 1-2.2uH inductors and ceramic capacitors. The 0.6V feedback reference with +/-1% accuracy supports output voltages down to 0.6V, making the device suitable for low-voltage core and I/O rails in modern processors and FPGAs. Auto-skip Eco-mode reduces the effective switching frequency at light loads, maintaining high efficiency across the entire load range. The power good (PG) output provides real-time output voltage status for system sequencing and monitoring. The SOT-23-8 package (2.9mm x 2.8mm) enables the smallest possible solution footprint.

The TPS563219DDFR uses D-CAP3 (emulated current-mode) control. (1) D-CAP3 Control: This proprietary control mode emulates the inductor current information from the output voltage ripple and internal ramp signal. Unlike traditional current-mode control, no current sense resistor or sense FET is needed. The emulated current information provides the advantages of current-mode control (cycle-by-cycle current limiting, improved line regulation) without the external compensation requirement. (2) Adaptive On-Time: The on-time is calculated adaptively based on the input voltage, output voltage, and switching frequency to maintain approximately constant frequency. This pseudo-fixed frequency operation simplifies EMI filter design. (3) Eco-Mode: At light loads, the device enters discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) where switching pulses are skipped to maintain regulation, improving light-load efficiency. (4) Power Good: The PG output is an open-drain transistor that pulls low when the output voltage falls below 85% or rises above 115% of the target.
