The TPS2065CDBVR from Texas Instruments is a single-channel current-limited power distribution switch in a compact SOT-23-5 package. The device integrates a 50mOhm N-channel MOSFET power switch with an adjustable current limit (0.5A to 1.5A), making it suitable for USB port power switching, hot-plug applications, and general-purpose power rail protection. The 50mOhm on-resistance is exceptionally low for a SOT-23-5 packaged device, resulting in only 50mV voltage drop at 1A load current, which is critical for maintaining USB voltage compliance (4.75V minimum at the connector from a 5V supply). The adjustable current limit is set by a single external resistor from the ILIM pin to GND, allowing the designer to customize the current limit for different load requirements without changing the IC. The auto-retry fault response means that after a fault (overcurrent or thermal shutdown), the switch automatically attempts to restart after a cooldown period, rather than latching off and requiring a manual reset or power cycle. This is ideal for applications with capacitive loads (like USB devices) that may draw high inrush current during hot-plug. The open-drain OC (OverCurrent) flag provides a fault signal to the host MCU, while the auto-retry ensures the switch eventually turns on once the fault clears. The 2.7V to 5.5V input voltage range covers both 3.3V and 5V systems.

The TPS2065CDBVR operates as a current-limited high-side power switch with auto-retry. Key subsystems include: (1) N-Channel MOSFET Switch – a low-RDS(on) N-channel MOSFET with an internal charge pump generating a gate voltage above VIN to fully enhance the switch; the 50mOhm RDS(on) provides low voltage drop at full load; (2) Current Limit – the current is sensed across the MOSFET; when the current exceeds the programmed limit (set by the external resistor on ILIM), the gate drive is reduced to limit the current; the current limit accuracy is +/-20% over temperature; the auto-retry mode means the switch continues to limit current and retry periodically rather than latching off; (3) Auto-Rtry Logic – when a fault condition (overcurrent or thermal shutdown) is detected, the switch turns off for a retry period (typically 50ms), then turns on again; if the fault persists, the cycle repeats indefinitely; the duty cycle during retry is approximately 0.5% (50ms off, 250us on), limiting average power dissipation during a sustained fault; (4) Thermal Shutdown – when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 140C, the switch is turned off to prevent damage; the switch automatically restarts when the temperature drops below the hysteresis threshold; (5) OC Flag – the open-drain OC pin is asserted low during any fault condition (overcurrent, thermal shutdown, or UVLO); the open-drain configuration allows multiple TPS2065C devices to share a common fault line with a single pull-up resistor.
