The TJA1050T from NXP Semiconductors is a high-speed CAN transceiver in a SOIC-8 package, serving as the interface between the CAN protocol controller and the physical bus. The device is fully compliant with the ISO 11898 standard and supports data rates up to 1Mbps. As an upgraded replacement for the PCA82C250, the TJA1050 offers improved EMC performance, lower standby current, and TXD dominant timeout protection while maintaining pin compatibility. The differential transmitter and receiver provide robust communication in noisy automotive and industrial environments. The bus pins are protected against automotive electrical transients including jump-start and load dump conditions. The 15uA typical standby current enables battery-friendly operation in always-connected systems. The TXD dominant timeout feature prevents a permanently dominant bus condition that could be caused by a stuck TXD input, a critical safety feature in multi-node CAN networks. The SOIC-8 package footprint is compatible with the PCA82C250, allowing direct PCB upgrade without layout changes.

The TJA1050T converts between the MCU’s digital CAN signals and the differential bus signals. (1) Transmit: When the MCU drives TXD low (dominant), the transceiver drives CANH high (~3.5V) and CANL low (~1.5V), creating a ~2V differential voltage on the bus. When TXD is high (recessive), both CANH and CANL are biased to ~2.5V (no differential voltage). (2) Receive: The differential receiver monitors the CANH-CANL voltage. When the differential exceeds ~0.9V, RXD is driven low (dominant). When below the threshold, RXD is high (recessive). (3) Slope Control: For lower data rates, the output slope can be reduced by connecting a resistor from the S pin to ground, improving EMC performance by reducing high-frequency content in the bus signals. (4) TXD Timeout: If TXD is held low for longer than the timeout period (typically 1-2ms), the transmitter is disabled, preventing a single faulty node from locking the bus in the dominant state. (5) Standby: In standby mode (S pin high), the transmitter is disabled and the receiver operates in low-power mode, drawing only 15uA.
