The PCA82C251T/YM from NXP Semiconductors is the industry-standard high-speed CAN transceiver in a SO-8 package. As the successor to the legendary PCA82C250, the PCA82C251 provides the physical layer interface between the CAN protocol controller and the differential bus, fully compliant with the ISO 11898 standard at data rates up to 1Mbps. The device has been deployed in millions of automotive CAN nodes worldwide, establishing it as one of the most reliable and well-characterized CAN transceivers available. The SO-8 pinout is compatible with many newer CAN transceivers (TJA1050, SN65HVD230, etc.), enabling easy upgrades. Slope control functionality allows reduction of the output slew rate at lower data rates, minimizing EMI without external filtering. The bus pins are short-circuit proof to battery voltage and ground, and thermal protection shuts down the transmitter if the junction temperature exceeds the safe limit. The -12V to +12V common mode input range accommodates ground shifts between CAN nodes in automotive environments.

The PCA82C251T/YM converts between the MCU digital CAN signals and the differential bus. (1) Transmit: When TXD is driven low (dominant), the transceiver drives CANH to approximately 3.5V and CANL to approximately 1.5V (with 5V supply), creating a ~2V differential. When TXD is high (recessive), both outputs are high-impedance and biased to 2.5V through internal biasing. (2) Receive: The differential receiver monitors the CANH-CANL voltage. A differential above ~0.9V drives RXD low (dominant). Below the threshold, RXD is high (recessive). (3) Slope Control: The Rs pin controls the output slew rate. When Rs is connected to ground through a resistor (typically 10-100kOhm), the output edges are slowed, reducing high-frequency EMI. When Rs is directly grounded, the transceiver operates at maximum speed. (4) Thermal Protection: If the die temperature exceeds approximately 160C, the transmitter is disabled. This protects the device during sustained bus fault conditions.
