The SS14 is a 40V, 1A Schottky barrier rectifier diode in an SMA (DO-214AC) surface-mount package. It is the surface-mount equivalent of the through-hole 1N5819, offering the same 0.5-0.6V low forward voltage drop and fast switching in a compact SMD footprint. The Schottky barrier construction provides negligible reverse recovery time, making it ideal for switching power supply applications. The SMA package is the most widely used SMD diode footprint, compatible with automated assembly and offering good thermal performance. The SS14 is commonly used as a catch diode in 1A-class buck converters and for reverse polarity protection in portable electronics.

The SS14 uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction. When forward-biased, majority carriers cross from the N-type semiconductor into the metal with a low energy barrier, producing the 0.5V forward drop at 1A. The absence of minority carrier storage means negligible reverse recovery time, enabling fast switching in power conversion circuits. This is critical for buck converters operating at 100kHz-1MHz where PN diode recovery losses would be significant.
