The 1N5819 is a 40V, 1A Schottky barrier rectifier diode in the industry-standard DO-41 axial package. Its key advantage over conventional silicon rectifiers is the low 0.6V forward voltage drop at 1A (versus 1.0V for standard diodes), which reduces power dissipation and improves efficiency in power applications. The Schottky barrier construction provides extremely fast switching with negligible reverse recovery time, making it ideal as a catch diode in switching regulators. The 25A surge current rating handles inrush and transient conditions. The 1N5819 is one of the most popular Schottky diodes for hobbyist and professional designs alike, commonly used with buck converters like the LM2596.

The 1N5819 uses a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction rather than a PN junction. When forward-biased, majority carriers (electrons) cross from the N-type semiconductor into the metal with minimal energy barrier, resulting in the low 0.6V forward voltage drop. Unlike PN junction diodes, Schottky diodes do not store minority carriers during forward conduction, so there is essentially no reverse recovery charge. This means the diode switches off almost instantly when the voltage reverses, eliminating the recovery losses that plague PN diodes in switching applications. The trade-off is higher reverse leakage current (1mA max at 40V) and lower maximum reverse voltage compared to PN junction diodes.
