The MPL115A2 is a miniature digital barometer from NXP Semiconductors that integrates a MEMS pressure sensor with a signal conditioning ASIC in a compact 3x5x1.2mm LGA package. It measures absolute pressure from 50 to 115 kPa with 12-bit resolution (0.015 kPa steps) and ±1 kPa accuracy. The device includes an integrated temperature sensor and factory-calibrated compensation coefficients stored in on-chip EEPROM. Communication is via a standard I2C interface at up to 400 kHz. The host reads raw pressure and temperature data along with calibration coefficients and performs the compensation calculation using the provided formula. At just 5 µA active current (1 sample/second) and 1 µA in shutdown, the MPL115A2 is ideal for battery-powered weather stations and altimeters.

The MPL115A2 uses a piezoresistive MEMS pressure sensor element fabricated on a silicon die. The sensor consists of a thin silicon diaphragm with implanted piezoresistors forming a Wheatstone bridge. Atmospheric pressure deflects the diaphragm, changing the resistance of the piezoresistive elements and producing a differential voltage output proportional to pressure. The ASIC digitizes both the pressure bridge output and the on-chip temperature sensor using a 12-bit ADC. Temperature compensation is essential because piezoresistive elements have significant temperature coefficients. The factory stores unique calibration coefficients (a0, b1, b2, c12) in on-chip EEPROM. The host microcontroller reads the raw pressure and temperature ADC values along with these coefficients and applies the polynomial compensation formula: Pcomp = a0 + (b1 + c12 times Tadc) times Padc + b2 times Tadc, then scales to kPa. This approach achieves ±1 kPa accuracy over the full temperature range.
