The ISO7742DBQR from Texas Instruments is a high-performance quad-channel digital isolator with two forward and two reverse channels in a 16-pin SSOP (DBQ) package. The device provides 3000 Vrms isolation with reinforced insulation rating per VDE, CSA, TUV, and CQC standards, 4242 VPK transient isolation, and up to 10 kV surge capability. The 100 Mbps maximum data rate supports high-speed isolated communication protocols including SPI, UART, and isolated RS-485/RS-232. The device achieves 85 kV/µs minimum CMTI and 10.7 ns typical propagation delay at 5V supply, making it suitable for motor drive and inverter applications with high common-mode noise. The capacitive SiO2 double insulation barrier provides long-term reliability with more than 30-year projected lifetime at 1500 Vrms working voltage. Enable pins (EN1/EN2) allow putting outputs in high-impedance for multi-master bus applications and reducing power consumption.

The ISO7742DBQR uses capacitive coupling through a double silicon dioxide (SiO2) insulation barrier to transfer digital signals across the isolation boundary. Each channel consists of an input buffer, a high-frequency modulator, two series isolation capacitors, a demodulator, and an output buffer. The modulator encodes the input logic state into differential pulses that pass through the capacitive barrier. The demodulator on the output side recovers the original logic level. An internal refresh mechanism periodically updates the output state even when the input is static, preventing the output from drifting. If input power is lost, the output defaults to high (non-F suffix) or low (F suffix). The enable pins (EN1, EN2) control the output buffers on each side independently. The robust EMC design includes system-level ESD protection (8 kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge across barrier), EFT immunity, and surge immunity.
