The BQ24090DGQR from Texas Instruments is a standalone single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery charger with integrated power-path management in a compact 2.5 x 2.5 mm VQFN-10 package. The device accepts input from USB ports or AC adapters (4.35 V to 6.45 V) and provides programmable charge current up to 1.1 A. The power-path management feature allows the system to be powered from the input source while the battery charges simultaneously, with the battery supplementing system current when the input source is insufficient. The device automatically detects USB connection and limits input current to 100 mA or 500 mA accordingly. The 1% charge voltage accuracy ensures safe and complete charging. Thermal regulation reduces the charge current when the junction temperature exceeds 110°C, preventing thermal shutdown. The NTC thermistor input monitors battery temperature and suspends charging outside the qualified range.

The BQ24090DGQR implements a three-phase Li-Ion charging profile: pre-charge, constant-current (CC), and constant-voltage (CV). When a deeply depleted battery (below 2.5 V) is connected, the pre-charge phase applies a reduced current (10% of programmed current) to safely bring the battery above the pre-charge threshold. The CC phase then applies the full programmed charge current until the battery voltage reaches 4.2 V. The CV phase maintains the battery at 4.2 V while the charge current gradually decreases. When the current drops to 10% of the programmed value (C/10 termination), charging is complete and the device enters a low-current maintenance state. The power-path management uses an internal switch to connect the input supply directly to the system output (SYS) when available, and a separate switch connects the battery to SYS when the input is absent. Dynamic power management reduces charge current if the system load plus charge current exceeds the input current limit.
