The ESDA6V1W5 from STMicroelectronics is a 4-line unidirectional TRANSIL ESD protection array in SOT-323-5L package. The device features 6.1V minimum breakdown voltage with 3V stand-off, 7.5pF line capacitance at 3V bias, and +/-8kV IEC 61000-4-2 contact discharge protection. The low 1.1 Ohm dynamic resistance provides effective clamping at 6V typical during ESD events. The unidirectional configuration is suitable for positive signal lines. The ultra-small SOT-323-5L package occupies less than 4.2mm2 PCB area, ideal for space-constrained portable devices.

The ESDA6V1W5 operates as a multi-line TRANSIL ESD protection clamp. (1) Each of the four I/O lines is connected to GND through a unidirectional TVS diode structure. During normal operation, the diode is reverse-biased below the stand-off voltage (3V), drawing less than 1uA leakage current and presenting only 7.5pF capacitance, which does not affect high-speed data signals. (2) When an ESD event occurs (positive transient), the TVS diode breaks over at 6.1V minimum and clamps the voltage to approximately 6V at 1A peak current. The low 1.1 Ohm dynamic resistance ensures the clamping voltage remains close to the breakdown voltage, providing effective protection for sensitive ICs. (3) For negative transients, the internal forward-biased diode clamps the voltage to a diode drop below GND (-0.9V typical). The device complies with IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (8kV contact, 15kV air discharge) and MIL-STD-883E Method 3015-7 Class 3 (25kV HBM).
