The DS3231SN from onsemi (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a highly accurate I2C real-time clock (RTC) with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO). With +/-2ppm accuracy (equivalent to +/-1 minute per year), it eliminates the need for external crystal and maintains timekeeping during power loss via battery backup. Packaged in SOIC-16 (300mil).

The DS3231SN from onsemi is a low-cost, extremely accurate I2C real-time clock with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO) and crystal. The device incorporates a battery input and maintains accurate timekeeping when main power to the device is interrupted. The integration of the crystal resonator enhances the long-term accuracy of the device and reduces the part-count in a manufacturing line. The RTC maintains seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year information. The date at the end of the month is automatically adjusted for months with fewer than 31 days, including corrections for leap year. Clock operates in either 24-hour or 12-hour format with AM/PM indication.

The DS3231 uses a 32.768kHz crystal oscillator with digital temperature compensation. An on-chip temperature sensor periodically measures the die temperature and a compensation algorithm adjusts the oscillator capacitance array to maintain the target frequency. The temperature sensor accuracy is +/-3C and the oscillator achieves +/-2ppm accuracy over 0C to +40C. Time is maintained in binary-coded decimal (BCD) format in a set of registers accessible via I2C. When VCC falls below VBAT, the device automatically switches to battery power, consuming only 3uA. Two alarm registers allow generating interrupts at specific times. The 32.768kHz output can be enabled on the SQW/INTB pin with programmable square-wave frequencies.
