The MQ-2 is a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) type gas sensor manufactured by Hanwei Electronics. It detects a broad range of flammable gases including LPG, propane, methane, alcohol, hydrogen, and smoke in the 300-10000ppm concentration range. The sensor uses a tin dioxide (SnO2) sensing layer whose resistance decreases in the presence of combustible gases. A built-in heater (5V) maintains the sensing element at the optimal operating temperature. Standard MQ-2 breakout modules provide both an analog output proportional to gas concentration and a digital output with an adjustable threshold via onboard potentiometer. The sensor requires a preheat period of at least 20 seconds for stable readings.

The MQ-2 uses a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor as the sensing element. In clean air, oxygen adsorbs onto the SnO2 surface, creating a depletion layer that increases the sensor resistance. When combustible gases are present, they react with the adsorbed oxygen, releasing electrons back into the conduction band and decreasing the sensor resistance. The resistance change is proportional to gas concentration (logarithmic relationship). The internal heater (5V, approximately 800mW) maintains the sensing layer at approximately 300C for optimal sensitivity and response time. The sensor output is the voltage across a load resistor in series with the sensing element.
