The CD4017BE from Texas Instruments is a CMOS decade counter/divider with 10 decoded outputs that activate sequentially on each rising clock edge. The 5-stage Johnson counter internally generates 10 timing states, each decoded to one of the Q0-Q9 outputs. Only one output is high at any time, making it ideal for sequential control applications. The carry-out (CO) output produces a pulse every 10 clock cycles, enabling cascading for longer sequences. The clock enable input (active low) allows clock gating, and the master reset returns the counter to the Q0 state. With a wide 3V to 15V supply range and 5.5MHz maximum clock frequency, it is one of the most versatile logic ICs for hobbyist and educational projects.

The CD4017BE uses a 5-stage Johnson counter (twisted-ring counter) as its core. A Johnson counter feeds back the complement of the last stage to the first stage input, creating a sequence of 2N states for N stages (10 states for 5 stages). The 10 states are decoded by AND gates to produce the Q0-Q9 outputs. On each rising edge of the CLOCK input, the counter advances by one state. When CLOCK ENABLE is high, clock pulses are ignored. When RESET goes high, all stages are cleared and Q0 becomes active. The CARRY OUT signal is derived from the first flip-flop output, producing one pulse per complete 10-count cycle. Cascading is achieved by connecting CO of the first stage to the CLOCK input of the next stage.
